The journey that never ends: step to the next level.

The journey that never ends: step to the next level.

We have come a long way, haven’t we?

It seems ages since we started talking about our passions and how not to give up on them. And now we have reached the last post in this series, at least for now.

Since we have come a long way, I want to sum up our journey.

One day, quite a long time before I actually started writing, I decided to begin this journey. At first I felt quite alone, but then I discovered that out there in the world there were a lot of people doing the same: struggling to follow their passions.

I have always thought that, being this kind of journey so difficult, no one would have willingly shared wisdom acquired at such a high price. We are all a bit (or a lot) self-centered, we often think about other people as a threat and we tend to keep the good to ourselves. But you know what?

I was wrong.

From those people, who fight every day, I learnt the importance of sharing and I decided to write about something I have been practicing for all of my life: not giving up.

I thought (and write) about the times when I decided to listen to that instinct that resides somewhere between my stomach and my belly. Then I thought about how to temper instinct with rationality and I understood that relying upon instinct doesn’t mean to act without thinking. Relying upon instinct means to consider all of your option without fear.

After that I realised that we can’t do everything. There isn’t enough time and energy, that’s why we have to make choices and give up on something, possibly the things that are unhealthy for us.

As always during a journey, I brought with me my music. Music has been my constant companion during good and bad times, so it was natural that it was my talisman. Everyone needs one in this journey, something that helps regain focus during hard times.

After the burst of excitment, I met the first risk: that of feeling too confident and stop practicing at not giving up. It may work for a while, but then you would be tempted to go back to your former life, because it’s easier. Instead, if you practice long enough, you create a habit and this is essential on the long term.

The journey is not always a matter of will and introspection. There are a lot of enemies to fight.

Some are inside us. Do you know that annoying voice that keep saying that you can’t do it or that you are not good enough? That is the inner critic you need to silence (with force if necessary).

But there are also outer enemies, people who will always be ready to treat your passion as something trivial. In this case the secret is simple: don’t let them discourage you, because they’re not in your shoes.

Dealing with enemies taught me something important: as much fun as you can get through a little revenge on your detractors, the important thing is not being an enemy for others. Be kind. Be supportive. And you may find people willing to support you too.

Oh yes. Believe me, whatever you are getting through, you are not alone [link]. The net is an essential tool, it allows you to get in touch with others that are facing the same struggles and may help you… or simply walk with you for a while.

There is one last thing I learnt: from time to time it’s right to reward yourself a little. When you feel overwhelmed, when you feel you need a break… have it. Don’t worry, there’s no hurry. Your passion will wait for you.

Now what?

It’s time to step to the next level: share your journey.

I know, it’s not easy, but which of those steps was? Maybe you don’t feel like to, but it helps to get better and better at what you do. I know from experience, that talking with others and sharing your experience helps to better understand yourself.

There are a lot of ways to share your journey:

  • Write an ebook about it and self publish
  • Start a blog
  • Start a podcast
  • Open a page or a group on facebook and post about it
  • Go to conferences and meetings on the subject
  • Find groups of people that are passionate about the same and get in touch with them.

I am sure there are other ways that don’t come to my mind right now, but you have imagination enough to come up with something else if these don’t suits you.

Just one last thing before you go your way.

Remember that this is a journey that never ends. There’s always something new to learn, something new to try, someone new to meet. And there’s always room for improvement… so don’t feel as if you have made it.

Don’t-feel-as-if-you-have-made-it.

Never.

Keep going.
